GUM DISEASE TREATMENTS & SOLUTIONS

Periodontal (gum) disease is one of the most common oral health conditions in the US. Unfortunately, this common condition has been linked to a number of oral and systemic illnesses that can be detrimental to your health. That’s why we take gum disease prevention and early intervention very seriously at Barco Family Dentistry. If you experience bleeding, swollen, discolored, or inflamed gum tissue that may indicate the development of periodontal disease, please call our team right away.

SCALING & ROOT PLANING

In the earliest stages of gum disease, known as gingivitis, more frequent professional cleanings may be adequate in renewing oral health, but as gum disease progresses to the more severe periodontitis, more advanced treatments may be necessary. Typically, we’ll start with scaling and root planing. Scaling is the systematic removal of plaque and tartar buildup below the gum line, and root planing is the smoothing of tooth roots to prevent future buildup that could lead to renewed or advanced gum disease.

ANTIBIOTIC THERAPY

In addition to scaling and root planing, you will likely need to visit us three or four times each year, so our hygienist can perform advanced maintenance cleanings. We may also provide oral or topical antibiotics to reduce the number of plaque producing bacteria in the mouth. This further reduces the risk for the advancement or relapse of gum disease, and keeps your smile healthier between visits. If we note areas for concern, we may encourage additional antibiotic treatment during your cleaning appointments.
