Tooth Extractions

GETTING PATIENTS OUT OF PAIN COMFORTABLY

sudden toothache can turn a happy day into a painful one. Discomfort in a tooth can often leave patients feeling like they can’t work, smile, speak, or most other normal activities. Thankfully, at Barco Family Dentistry, we have a solution that can relieve your pain quickly and comfortably: tooth extractions in Bloomington. While this is never our first choice for treatment, extraction will get you back on your way toward a comfortable smile. Keep reading to learn more about this procedure and when it is necessary.

WHY YOU MAY NEED A TOOTH EXTRACTION

Extraction is always our last option when it comes to treatment, however, we may recommend this procedure if your tooth:

  • Is too decayed to be restored with a filling or crown
  • Is unstable due to advanced gum disease
  • Has broken to the point that the enamel cannot be repaired
  • Is crowding an area where you need dentures, orthodontics, or other treatments
  • Is a lingering baby tooth that’s blocking an adult one

We may also recommend extraction if there is an infection. Oral infections can spread if they’re not dealt with as soon as possible, potentially affecting your gums, jawbone, and other parts of your body. In some cases, extraction is the only way we can stop this issue.

THE TOOTH EXTRACTION PROCEDURE

Once Dr. Barco, an expert dentist in Bloomington, has decided that your tooth must be extracted, he will ensure that you’re completely numb and comfortable before beginning. He also offers options for sedation to give his patients a chance to enjoy a deeper sense of relaxation. Next, he will use a special dental instrument to rock the tooth back and forth before extracting it. This is a simple, calm procedure that will help you get out of pain and back to smiling with health.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT AFTER TOOTH EXTRACTION

The aftercare for this procedure is easy! Dr. Barco has provided some key steps on how to ensure you get the smooth recovery, including:

  • Give yourself at least a day or two to rest.
  • Take your pain medication has directed.
  • Use gauze pads to minimize bleeding but be sure to change them out if they become soaked.
  • Use a cold compress to reduce swelling. You can alternate the icepack for 10 minutes on the affected area and 10 minutes off for the best results.
  • Avoid using a straw for the first 24 hours.
  • Be sure to maintain brushing and flossing but avoid the extraction site.
  • Prop your head up while laying down.
  • Avoid smoking or tobacco use.
